The Importance of Delta Sigma Theta

Founded on January 13, 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an organization of college educated women committed to public service with an emphasis on programs that target the African American community. 

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. The sorority's founders envisioned an organization that would enhance the purposeful lives of its members and positively impact society.  Over ten thousand women have joined the sisterhood since its inception and the sorority now boasts over 200 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany (Heidelberg), the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Bahamas, Jamaica and the Republic of Korea.

The sorority's public service initiatives are numerous and far-reaching. In fact, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest provider of African American college scholarships through its educational development programs including Academic Enrichment, Financial Fitness, and Physical Fitness & Wellness. Additionally,Delta Sigma Theta Sorority supports local communities through a multitude of initiatives including but not limited to: voter registration drives; financial literacy workshops; mentoring programs for at-risk youth; women's wellness retreats; homeless shelters; substance abuse awareness and prevention campaigns; international aid efforts; and support for victims of natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti.
