A Brief History of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

Founded on November 12, 1922, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is a historically black sorority that boasts over 500 chapters internationally. The sorority was founded on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven young educators. Sigma Gamma Rho is a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and works to enhance the quality of life for women and their families in local and global communities through service initiatives.

The founders of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. created the sorority with the intention of providing assistance and support to those in need. From its humble beginnings as an organization focused on helping African American women succeed in higher education, Sigma Gamma Rho has grown into a premier service organization that serves individuals of all backgrounds.
