A Brief History of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

Founded on November 12, 1922, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is a historically black sorority that boasts over 500 chapters internationally. The sorority was founded on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven young educators. Sigma Gamma Rho is a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and works to enhance the quality of life for women and their families in local and global communities through service initiatives.

The founders of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. created the sorority with the intention of providing assistance and support to those in need. From its humble beginnings as an organization focused on helping African American women succeed in higher education, Sigma Gamma Rho has grown into a premier service organization that serves individuals of all backgrounds. The sorority remains true to its mission of empowering women and inspiring positive change in communities around the world.

Sigma Gamma Rho's Philanthropic Initiatives
Sigma Gamma Rho's philanthropic efforts are centered around educating young people, enhancing health and wellness, and promoting leadership development. The sorority offers programs and services that target these areas through its partnerships with organizations like the March of Dimes, Big Brothers Big Sisters, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Sigma Gamma Rho also has its own foundation, the Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF), which provides scholarships to deserving students who are committed to giving back to their communities.
